Bill Murray is the most fascinating sad clown ever since I saw him Lost in Translation in 2003 (and later Broken Flowers, and I am probably going to see Coffee and Cigarettes tonight). He’s legendary (Scrooged is the best Christmas movie) and I relate to him the most from all of the 80′s comedians (as well as 90′s Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler). I feel like everything he says is sage advice (he’s run the gamut and seen everything). He is known for not having an agent, publicist, or manager. He is popular in the rumor mill for being known to do extraordinary midlife-crisis acts on ordinary people in NYC:
It was earlier today around noon near Times Square. I’ve been on vacation with a couple of my friends in the city and most of them were sleeping in after a late night. I strolled out of the hotel and made my way to a nearby Mcdonald’s to grab some fries and a shake. When I was waiting to cross at the 46th and 7th crosswalk I noticed a hand slip around me from behind and grab two of my fries. In my confusion I turned around and HOLY SHIT ITS BILL FUCKING MURRAY! Before I could get a word out, he yelled over the crowd, “No one will ever believe you.” He then cross to the other side of 7th avenue and disappeared into the crowd.
Or bartending at SXSW last year and dressing up as a hot dog. He is a hoot to see on David Letterman’s show (the only place I ever see appearances of him) because everything is so implicit… so inside baseball like they are real buddies. He was even Dave’s very first guest before Ghostbusters came out (yes, there is indeed a Bill Murray subreddit). That’s why it was so great to hear an interview from him on Howard Stern (the greatest interviewer) on the phone probing Murray for personal information, his feelings on life at age 62, how much he likes living in NYC, and why he doesn’t want to do Ghostbusters III:

Date: 2-22-2011 (admittedly Howard’s best interviews are when the guest is in the studio and he did seem a bit starstruck in this interview)
And for those 80′s cartoon aficionados I remember realizing this once (saw this on SA Forums: Stuff you can’t believe you just figured out):
- Bill Murray played Peter Venkman in the “Ghostbusters” movie.
- Lorenzo Music was the voice of Peter Venkman in “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon.
- Lorenzo Music was the voice of Garfield in the cartoons.- Bill Murray does the voice of Garfield in the live-action/CG movies.
What a bizarre cycle….
