In 1998, Pearl Jam sang about 2010. This video is still carries a very strong message. Do The Evolution, one of my favorite videos.
They even predicted the part where everyone’s slaves to the nanobot tubes and and the self-indulgent Idiocracy scene. You can really see the Batman: Animated Series inspiration in the girl and Spawn comic inspired sullen faces.
I have to wonder what today’s actual world/environment would be like if kids exclusively grew up watching cartoons like this on Saturday mornings — would there be more insidious malice or more gun-shy benevolence ingrained from within? Or does the latter inevitably cause the former as things scale up, or vice-versa. Or is it irrelevant and just in our nature to be the way we are… Youa get yours and I’ma get mine.
Nature untouched by humans seems vicious in itself. Next up, I’ll be watching Watership Down (my sister saw this when she was ~9) and Plague Dogs — both of which have realistic, adult animated tones.
